The underlying architecture that most account-based strategies rely on is rooted in pyramid- shaped ABM deployment models that were introduced between 2014 and 2016.

These deployment models are not only outdated, but fail to reflect the nature in which ABM leaders are successfully implementing and scaling their programs.

A lack of modernization is undoubtedly creating friction for ABM leaders. This is highlighted in the ForgeX 2025 State of ABM Report, as practitioners consistently ranked a “Lack of internal understanding of the ABM deployment models” as their second most significant challenge, no matter what ABM deployment model(s) they are currently leveraging.

The main reasons why legacy ABM deployment models require an update include:

Fail to represent a modern operating model for “1:Many” to scale ABM across 100s or 1000s of accounts, resulting in poor implementation and execution. Legacy terminology has created ambiguity around the definitions and distinctions between ABM deployment models, leading to internal confusion. Originally built for ABM teams who focus on a small subset of accounts that have immensely high revenue potential, and was designed to run alongside a lead-focused Demand Generation / Integrated Marketing function. Lack a framework for the convergence of demand generation and ABM into a full account- based GTM strategy, of which go-to-market leaders are now under immense pressure to deliver. Do not represent Deal-Based ABM as a core deployment model.

Due to the lack of meaningful innovation that legacy deployment models have received, GTM leaders and practitioners have been left to fend for themselves. Even leading market research firms have underinvested in the advancement of the practice, starving practitioners even further.

This is why software companies that sell ABM technology are where practitioners have turned towards to help fill this innovation gap.

This has influenced misconceptions such as:

Organizations must purchase an ABM platform in order to successfully deploy an ABM strategy. ABM is only a targeted paid ad tactic. Target account lists require 3rd party intent data in order to be built. “1:1 ABM” can be implemented across 10s of accounts at scale, by a single practitioner.

As demand generation and ABM continue the path of convergence, it’s evident that B2B marketing is now in the era of account-based GTM.

ForgeX’s research-backed ABM deployment models give GTM leaders a clear operating system to scale with precision, align cross-functional teams, and drive revenue growth.

ForgeX has conducted rigorous multi-dimensional research to uncover how account-based strategies have modernized over the past 10+ years.

There are four clear ABM deployment models that have emerged. Organizations may leverage one, or multiple simultaneously. The most forward-thinking marketing functions have entirely transitioned their overarching strategies and team structures to leverage these.

They all utilize campaigns for execution, which we define as:

Campaign: A unified, continuous strategy where cross-functional GTM teams collaborate to engage target accounts through a holistic mix of personalized channels, motions, and tactics.

Encompasses both the 1:1 and 1:Few approaches, requiring a distinct go-to-market (GTM) strategy supported by extensive multi-touch campaigns tailored to a single account or small cluster of accounts.

06

Enterprise ABM

1:1 1:Few

Account Coverage Per Campaign 1 individual account. Typically no more than 25 accounts in a cluster.

Campaign Deployment

A campaign is built for each individual account. Hyper-personalized engagement strategy that is built from deep account research; all events, assets and content are built /tailored just for the individual account.

A campaign is built for each cluster of accounts. There is limited variance of tactical eligibility, personalization or resource allocation across each account.

# of Accounts Covered by an Individual Practitioner

(if solely deploying this model)

2-8 accounts maximum at one time. 1-4 clusters that typically include no more than 25 accounts at one time.

When It Typically Should Be Deployed When It Typically Should Not Be Deployed

1:1

The account justifies high resource investment due to revenue potential per account (+$250k) Long and complex sales cycles The organization has ample resources to allocate a significant investment into a select account Usually used to expand or retain existing customers High strategic importance to company’s overall growth objectives

Operational capacity is limited, with teams spread thin or lacking the specialization needed for intensive, account-specific work Lower ACV makes high-resource investment unjustifiable Shorter sales cycles Better suited for broader, less intensive GTM strategies There is only one meaningful opportunity in the account

1:Few

Accounts can be grouped into microsegments with similar needs High revenue potential account clusters that justify the investment of dedicated support Longer, more complex sales cycles Sales team structure enables easier collaboration

Insufficient resources to develop cluster-specific content and/or campaign assets Need to scale account coverage across 100s or 1000s of accounts Short, low complex sales cycles

We often see both 1:1 and 1:Few leveraged at the same time by a single practitioner. They will balance this blended approach according to bandwidth capabilities and the amount of GTM resources at their disposal.

Modernized ABM Deployment Models August 5, 2025

Operates as a 1:Many model, specifically designed for engagement of the entirety of a target account list. This methodology involves scoring and prioritizing accounts, and then segmenting accounts into tiers, often three in number. The assigned tier dictates the extent of personalization and tactical eligibility an account receives, thereby optimizing resource allocation and ensuring the most tailored efforts are made where they matter most.

07

Growth ABM

Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3

Tier Definition Accounts that are the highest GTM priority.

Accounts that are high GTM priority, but do not meet the selective threshold to make the Tier 1 group.

Accounts that are a high enough GTM priority to deploy resources to, but not enough to justify an investment higher than scaled tactics.

Account Coverage Per Campaign Lowest number of accounts. Medium number of accounts. Scaled number of accounts.

Campaign Deployment They're eligible for less-scalable highly personalized tactics, and receive more GTM resources.

They benefit from a slightly lower degree of personalized tactics and GTM resource allocation.

They receive scaled personalized tactics and GTM resource allocation.

# of Accounts Covered by an Individual Practitioner

Low. Medium. High.

When It Typically Should Be Deployed When It Typically Should Not Be Deployed

You need to scale coverage across 100s or 1000s of accounts Lower ACV makes an Enterprise ABM investment unfeasible Medium-long sales cycles There is already scalable account coverage and tiered engagement

Extremely small target account list Very high ACV per account that justifies deeper, individualized engagement High-volume, transactional sales cycles that don’t allow time for tailored engagement Insufficient tech stack and data literacy Insufficient budget or team capacity to execute scaled, segmented campaigns effectively

Growth ABM allows for a scaled ABM deployment across 50, 100s or 1000s of accounts. Forward- thinking marketing leaders are embracing this model as they shift their demand generation / integrated marketing functions away from lead-centric tactics toward a more targeted, account- based strategy.

Modernized ABM Deployment Models August 5, 2025

When It Typically Should Be Deployed When It Typically Should Not Be Deployed

Open opportunity with significant deal size or CLV, justifying dedicated resources Complex buying process with multiple buying group members Significant competitive pressure where targeted efforts can sway the outcome Large deals at risk of not being won without additional support from marketing

Low deal size or limited CLV does not justify intensive resources Short sales cycles or naturally fast-moving deals Limited organizational capacity to dedicate focused resources on individual opportunities

Deal-Based ABM

Campaign Deployment Deal-Based ABM supports a single opportunity within an account. Unlike 1:1 Enterprise ABM, which supports an entire account across multiple deals and buying groups.

Application in Enterprise ABM and Growth ABM

Can be used to support prioritized deals from accounts in both 1:Few and Growth ABM programs, provided the deal is of sufficient strategic importance. Not deployed for 1:1.

Account Coverage Per Campaign Varies based on coverage requirements, bandwidth and resource availability.

# of Accounts Covered by an Individual Practitioner Varies based on coverage requirements, bandwidth and resource availability.

Deploying additional GTM resources and efforts for an opportunity within a specific account in order to add supplemental support to help it progress and/or grow.

08

Deal-Based ABM

Deal-Based ABM support can often resemble the level of personalization and cross-functional coordination found in 1:1 Enterprise ABM. However, the two models serve fundamentally different purposes.

Deal-Based ABM focuses on supporting a single, existing opportunity and buying group within an account. 1:1 Enterprise ABM, by contrast, is built to drive long-term account growth by engaging, shaping, and supporting multiple deals, often across diverse buying groups and business units within the same account.

Growth ABM (1:Many) is the most widely adopted model, with 75% of organizations actively leveraging it. This is expected, given its scalable structure and capability to cover a larger list of target accounts.

Enterprise ABM, by contrast, is applied far more selectively due to its intensive resource requirements and more narrowed focus on a small set of high-value accounts. 1:Few is very common with 65% adoption, followed by 1:1 which is used more selectively at 53%.

Deal-Based ABM is still emerging with 45% of organizations actively leveraging it. While relatively new, it is becoming increasingly important, particularly in complex enterprise sales where personalized support for in-flight opportunities can influence deal velocity and ACV.

10

The adoption of each ABM deployment model varies widely, reflecting the strategic complexity and maturity of modern go-to-market organizations. This is further highlighted in the ForgeX 2025 State of ABM Report.

Standardizing ABM Terminology: Cleaning Up Years of Confusion

As noted earlier, one of the top challenges ABM practitioners face is a “Lack of internal understanding of the ABM deployment models”. The misuse of ABM deployment definitions and terminology internally can lead to damaging outcomes, including sales teams being unclear on the level of treatment their accounts will receive and a breakdown in trust among senior leaders.

One of the most common misinterpretations across practitioners is the definition of “1:1 ABM”. We often hear of practitioners referencing their Growth ABM Tier 1 strategy as the deployment of “1:1 ABM”.

When practitioners who are deploying an Enterprise ABM 1:1 strategy hear this, it leaves them significantly confused. This tends to end in the practitioner leveraging an Enterprise ABM strategy conveying to the practitioner using a Growth ABM strategy that they “aren’t really practicing ABM”. Even more concerning, internal teams often use the same terminology to describe different deployment models, which leads to misalignment in execution and expectation across cross- functional teams.

This is why ForgeX has pioneered modernized ABM deployment models with standardized, purpose-built terminology. They give go-to-market teams a common language to align strategy, assign resources, and clearly communicate what level of treatment each account will receive.

Other terms currently used in the market to describe ForgeX’s ABM deployment models include:

To highlight the fundamental differences between ABM deployment models, the following comparison showcases two ends of the spectrum from the ForgeX Benchmarking Database. These real-world case studies represent organizations operating at opposite ends of our modernized, pyramid-shaped ABM model. 1:1 Enterprise ABM sits at the top, while Growth ABM anchors the base.

15

Modernized ABM Deployment Models

A Side-by-Side Benchmark Comparison: 1:1 Enterprise ABM vs. Growth ABM

Figure 12

Source: ForgeX Benchmarking Database

The differences in scale and strategy reveal why each model fits: 1:1 Enterprise ABM is deployed by a $19B ARR organization with deep resources and complex deal cycles. Each ABMer manages just six accounts, allowing for high-touch, personalized engagement aligned to large, multi-stakeholder buying groups. Growth ABM is used by an organization operating at $141M in ARR who has a leaner level of resources to allocate and requires broader account coverage. Each ABMer supports 350 accounts, structured across three tiers (Tier 1: 25, Tier 2: 75, Tier 3: 250).

The economic rationale behind each model becomes immediately clear: 1:1 Enterprise ABM was selected based on an ACV of $9M and a 547-day sales cycle. The investment of $33,000 per account is justified by the revenue potential and supports dedicated headcount and deep engagement across a small number of accounts. Growth ABM was chosen as it supports faster-moving deals with an ACV of $65,000 and a 120- day sales cycle. 1:1 Enterprise ABM would not be economically viable. The smaller revenue potential and need for scaled coverage requires a more efficient, tiered investment model.

6

To stay consistent with the case studies presented in the previous section, we are once again focusing on the two ends of the ABM deployment model spectrum: 1:1 Enterprise ABM and Growth ABM. This allows us to highlight the nuanced differences in channel strategy between highly personalized and scaled ABM strategies.

For a deeper look at all four deployment models and their channel-level distinctions, refer to the ForgeX 2025 State of ABM Report, which provides detailed benchmarks and usage data.

All figures cited below are sourced from that report.

16

Modernized ABM Deployment Models

Comparing Channel Strategies: 1:1 Enterprise ABM vs. Growth ABM

Figure 13

Source: ForgeX 2025 State of ABM Report

These examples reinforce why ABM deployment models must be selected based on business context. Variables such as contract value, sales cycle length, resource availability, and coverage goals all influence the appropriate model.

While both organizations are running ABM programs, their execution models are fundamentally different. Each one is purpose-built to fit its go-to-market strategy and economic reality.

1:1 Enterprise ABM programs prioritize resource-intensive, high-touch channels that align with long sales cycles and deep account engagement.

The top three most frequently used channels include:

In-person Events (19%) Digital Advertising (18%) Executive Engagement (15%)

While these tactics require a heavier lift, they are essential for creating tailored experiences at the individual account level. It’s also worth noting that Personalized Landing Pages (14%) play a critical role.

In contrast, Growth ABM is designed to engage a larger target account list efficiently. Its channel mix reflects the need for scale and repeatability, relying heavily on digital-first tactics to reach broader audiences.

The top three channels leveraged in Growth ABM programs include:

Digital advertising (28%) Content syndication (17%) Virtual events (17%)

These channels allow ABM teams to maintain coverage and engagement across hundreds of accounts while controlling for cost and resource investment.

Looking beyond 1:1 Enterprise ABM and Growth ABM, the other deployment models each bring unique channel strategies as well.

1:Few Enterprise ABM sits between 1:1 Enterprise ABM and Growth ABM in its use of channels. While it still leans into personalization and high-impact tactics, it also incorporates scalable elements to support clusters of accounts. This model blends the resource depth of 1:1 Enterprise ABM with selective scalability.

Deal-Based ABM often mirrors the resource-intensive channels used in 1:1 Enterprise ABM.

This contrast highlights how channel selection must match the deployment model. A channel that works in 1:1 can be inefficient in Growth ABM. Strategic alignment between model type and execution tactics is critical to success.

August 5, 2025

According to the ForgeX 2025 State of ABM Report, 57% of organizations report having a dedicated ABM team or role in place. Among these, more than half plan to expand that investment, and an additional 16% are preparing to stand up a dedicated ABM team for the first time in 2025.

As ABM has modernized, the need for clear role definitions and practitioner specialization has become urgent and unavoidable.

Two distinct ABM practitioner profiles have emerged across high-performing programs:

Enterprise ABM Practitioners (1:1, 1:Few) Growth ABM Practitioners (Cover 100s or 1000s accounts in a Tiered 1:Many operating model)

These reflect the operational differences required to run highly targeted programs versus scaled ones.

The rise of role specialization has been driven by three converging factors:

1. Each deployment model demands a different strategy, skill set, and mindset. 2.The growing complexity and maturity of ABM deployment models. 3.Assigning a single practitioner to deploy both Enterprise ABM and Growth ABM simultaneously

is not only inefficient, but often leads to misalignment, burnout, or poor program execution.

Best-in-class programs recognize this and build dedicated roles to support each model accordingly.

19

Modernized ABM Deployment Models

High-performing ABM programs often apply multiple deployment models in parallel, but do not rely on a single practitioner to manage them all. Instead, they establish clear collaboration between dedicated Enterprise ABM and Growth ABM practitioners, each accountable for distinct responsibilities.

Figure 14 illustrates how accounts move from a centralized target account list into prioritized deployment models. Enterprise ABM includes both 1:1 and 1:Few programs, while Growth ABM operates through a tiered 1:Many approach. Deal-Based ABM functions as a flexible overlay, used by both practitioner groups to support high-value, in-flight opportunities.

This coordinated structure ensures that ABM execution is aligned under a unified strategy while maintaining operational clarity, scale, and resource efficiency.

August 5, 2025

Leading organizations are modernizing their marketing functions by adopting a holistic account- based strategy. This is often implemented by leveraging multiple ABM deployment models simultaneously. Findings from the ForgeX 2025 State of ABM survey reinforce this trend as 81% of organizations deploy more than one ABM model at the same time.

Most organizations begin by segmenting their GTM account portfolio using a Growth ABM tiering model. Enterprise ABM accounts are typically drawn from Tier 1 or Tier 2 of the Growth ABM hierarchy, reflecting elevated strategic potential and the need for deeper investment. Over time, accounts may shift between Growth ABM and Enterprise ABM, provided those transitions are grounded in clear criteria and resourcing capacity.

Enterprise ABM, however, is not universally applicable. Organizations deploy it selectively, based on deal size, sales complexity, and available resourcing. The investment only makes sense when those thresholds are met.

Deal-Based ABM acts as a flexible overlay. Both Enterprise and Growth ABM practitioners may deploy Deal-Based ABM when a qualified opportunity emerges that requires targeted support. When accounts no longer meet the thresholds for any ABM deployment model, they are removed from the GTM portfolio. At that point, brand and awareness programs often maintain engagement until the account once again qualifies for ABM treatment.

We are also seeing a broader operational shift within organizations. Many teams are rethinking their traditional lead-centric demand generation or integrated marketing functions by evolving them into Growth ABM teams.

In practice:

Growth ABM enables scalable engagement across hundreds or thousands of accounts. Enterprise ABM delivers strategic focus to a small number of high-value accounts. Deal-Based ABM provides targeted acceleration where opportunity and timing align.

This combined strategy gives organizations flexibility to match investment levels to opportunity size, ensure alignment across GTM functions, and maintain efficiency as they scale.

Accounts not yet prioritized in the ABM target account list. Accounts that have been deprioritized or disqualified from ABM. Accounts currently active in ABM programs.

At the same time, organizations should exercise strategic restraint. There are scenarios where it makes sense to intentionally exclude active ABM accounts from broader brand or global campaigns. This requires close cross-functional collaboration amongst ABM practitioners and their brand and global campaigns counterparts.

The most effective go-to-market strategies integrate brand and ABM as complementary forces.

VI.

22

Modernized ABM Deployment Models

While ABM deployment models focus on targeted engagement across a named portfolio of accounts, brand and global campaigns play a critical role in maintaining market presence, generating awareness, and shaping perception across the broader addressable market.

Brand serves as a persistent, foundational layer that supports:

Each ABM deployment model requires distinct campaign and program strategies, skill sets, and resourcing. Assigning one practitioner to manage both Enterprise ABM and Growth ABM introduces prioritization conflicts, executional dilution, and a high risk of burnout.

Avoid Assigning Multiple Deployment Models to One ABM Practitioner

Modernized ABM Deployment Models

23

GuidanceVII.

Determine whether you need an Enterprise ABM or Growth ABM practitioner before opening a role. This decision directly influences hiring criteria, team structure, and success metrics. Role clarity ensures alignment between practitioner capabilities and your ABM operating model.

Define ABM Role Requirements Before Hiring

Make sure your ABM deployment model aligns tightly with your organization’s go-to-market strategy. Choosing the wrong model(s) is a common and costly mistake in ABM. It disrupts execution, strains resources, and limits measurable impact.

Ensure ABM Deployment Models Map to Your GTM Strategy

Transforming demand generation or integrated campaigns teams into Growth ABM teams is a natural progression. It improves sales alignment, enhances resource efficiency, and provides clearer accountability across targeting, tiering, and engagement. This transition helps organizations scale ABM with greater clarity and operational focus.

Executive alignment is critical to program credibility, resource protection, and long-term viability. Without it, ABM risks being deprioritized during planning cycles, shifting priorities, or budget realignments. Treat executive buy-in as a foundational requirement.

Secure Executive Buy-In Early

Start with a focused pilot and expand methodically. Deploying an account-based strategy introduces both cultural and operational change. A phased approach reduces risk, accelerates cross-functional adoption, and ensures the program matures with organizational readiness.

Scale Your ABM Program Through Phased Rollouts (Crawl, Walk, Run)

ABM terminology must be clearly defined and consistently used. When terms like “1:1 ABM” are interpreted inconsistently, confusion spreads and alignment breaks down. Establish shared definitions to prevent miscommunication and preserve trust between marketing, sales, and leadership.
